It is imperative for socialists to be able to explain why workers accept bourgeois ideas regarding class, gender and race, the lie of capitalist democracy, and reformist strategies for social change. Drawing on Lukacs and Gramsci, this talk will attempt to sketch a framework for explaining the mixed consciousness that tends to be expressed by the working class, and how it might come to a fully socialist worldview.
